Artists inspired by the South Downs
Many famous artists have been inspired by the special landscape of the South Downs - its chalk hills, river valleys and sandy heaths. In these pages, we take a look at the work of some of these artists over the last few centuries and talk to some important modern artists about how the Downs have influenced their work.
Find out how the famous 19th Century artist, JMW Turner used his art to make his living through private patronage; how the downland countryside became home to artist communities in the early 20th Century; and about two key landscape artists, whose paintings reflect some of the very different types of landscape you can find in the Downs. Artists today show their links with the Downs in many different ways, including using the environment around them to carry out public art projects.
