Where is the South Downs?
The Downs is a line of hills that run from Winchester in the west to Eastbourne in the east. The eastern half, from the River Arun to Eastbourne, is mainly hills made of chalk rock and is about 5km (3 miles) wide. To the west of the Arun, the area is wider and includes not only chalk hills but also part of the Weald made of sandstones and clay.

The chalk hills of the South Downs extend for about 170 km (106 miles) and the two AONBs cover an area of 1374 square kilometres (137,431 hectares).
