Integrated Landscape Character Assessment
The South Downs Integrated Landscape Character Assessment was prepared for the South Downs Joint Committee, in partnership with the Countryside Agency, English Heritage, Hampshire County Council, West Sussex County Council and East Hampshire District Council by Land Use Consultants December 2005.
What is it that makes the South Downs special? What are the issues affecting the quality and character of its unique landscape? What are the past and future forces for change that have shaped and will continue to shape the landscape? These questions and many others are answered in a new Character Assessment for the South Downs published in March.
Written by Land Use Consultants, who have also been responsible for the development of the Management Plan, the Character Assessment looks at the South Downs within the designation boundary of the National Park. It explains the evolution of the landscape, the physical influences that shape it, its nature conservation characteristics, the farming and management systems that support it and its socio-economic profile. The complexity of the South Downs is reflected in the fact that there are 18 landscape types and 49 character areas. This invaluable information has fed into the Management Plan, through the Strategic Environmental Assessment, so ensuring that the plan is responding to the needs of the South Downs environment.
